报告题目：Understanding Wheat Resistance to Hessian Fly and Molecular Mechanisms of Heat-induced Loss of Wheat Resistance 小麦对黑森蝇抗性和热诱导下小麦抗性丧失机制的研究

Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) is one of the most destruct insects of common bread wheat (Triticum aestivum). Wheat-Hessian fly interaction is an excellent model to study gene-for-gene based host plant resistance to insects and pathogens. We attempt to understand the mechanisms of wheat resistance to Hessian fly and the loss of wheat resistance under high temperature (heat stress). In this seminar, I will be reporting 1) differential responses of wheat plants to Hessian fly infestation at molecular level between resistant and susceptible interactions, 2) genes and metabolic pathways that are likely involved in the loss of wheat resistance under heat stress. Our results were generated using a combination of phenotyping, genomics, and metabolomics approaches.
Dr. Zhu received her Ph.D. degree from Kansas State University in 2005. She joined Fayetteville State University as an Assistant Professor in 2007 and became a full professor in 2017. Dr. Zhu is interested in the tritrophic interaction among plants, insects, and their environments. In her research, Dr. Zhu uses a combination of phenotyping and ‘omics’ approaches to understand plant-insect interaction on the context of global warming and environmental change. Currently, Dr. Zhu is the Principle Investigator of an NSF-funded grant “Mechanisms of heat-induced loss of host plant resistance to insects.”
As a faculty in a teaching-intensive and minority serving university, Dr. Zhu has a passion in promoting student success through research and scholarship. Dr. Zhu also served as an Interim Chair and Assistant Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences.
